Mine dores the same, rolls and does unique high jump practice in the yard, is completely soaked, but seems to be as happy as a lark.     How about your dogs, Tessie?

I see someone has already posted in Kepek the photo of the Westminster Kuvasz breed winner. She represents one type of Kuvasz that is sometimes popular with American judges--having a very short muzzle, lots of stop, a rounded crown, and pale colored eyes.

You can find the health test results for many Kuvasz in the US. Not just hip data, but elbows, patellas, thyroid, CERF (an eye exam--does not include the Optigen test for PRA), cardiac, etc. I have not seen any Optigen test results for Kuvasz show up. Yet.

When I got my first Kuvasz in the 1970s, health testing of Kuvasz in the US was not common. Many Kuvasz had hip dysplasia. Not many could pass the hip xray test and be certified by OFA (orthopedic foundation for animals). So breeders started selecting for better hips and choosing for breeding stock those animals that could get a hip clearance number from OFA. It took hard work over years, and some difficult choices, but hips are better. Hip dysplasia is by no means eliminated in the Kuvasz in the US, but it is better than before. Now it is quite common (and expected) to have the parents of a litter, as well as their parents and grandparents to all have hip clearances. OFA even recommends having the siblings of breeding stock xrayed to see what kind of genes are present. Are most of the puppies in a litter free of hip dysplasia? If so, animals from that litter make better breeding prospects than those from litters with multiple puppies with bad hips (even if the one you want to breed has good hips). Xraying all or most dogs in a litter is advised, but it is hard to do, and needless to say it is EXPENSIVE!!! It only happens some of the time here. Breeders are not always loaded with cash.  And puppy buyers don't necessarily want to do the xrays (and there is the cash again....).

One of the most famous dog shows in the USA will take place next week on Monday and Tuesday. This is the Westminster Kennel Club Show. There are 8 Kuvasz entered--1 dog (male) and 7 bitches (females). The show has streaming video on the web of the breed judging. It is supposed to be available within about 2 hours after the judging of each breed. Here is the main webpage: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/
Kuvasz show at 9:30am New York time (Eastern Standard Time). I'm not sure how many hours that is behind the timezone in Hungary. But the streaming video should be available to watch Monday evening. Guess I forgot to say Kuvasz show on Monday.

P.S. You might find it strange , but in Hungary we must give our mother's name on any kind of identification. That's how it is.

It's really a pretty expensive test! But the test result can make the breeder sure to choose the right dogs for breeding. If I were in charge, HD and ED tests also would be inevetable for breeding. As I see in the States the health is on the top of the list. In Hungary it's in the bottom. That makes me uncomfortable.

Yes in the past few days we have been discussing it. So far I haven1t heard of it, it is really frightening, isn't it? People say that it isn't very common to test it in Hungary, Some people here on the forum are saying that dogs should be tested, and are trying to find some solutions.

I see that the terrible eye problem PRA is being discussed. This is good. Will the Hungaria Kuvasz Club be setting a policy on this ?
As some of you know, the American company Optigen now has a DNA test that can determine if a Kuvasz is clear/normal, a carrier, or affected with PRA. Up until now this required a blood test. I have been talking to Optigen about making this test available by cheek swab. This involves taking a little brush and swabbing the inside of the dog's cheek to get skin cells. DNA is extracted from these cells. Optigen is now working to make the cheek swab method available within the next couple of months.
In the USA very few Kuvasz have been DNA tested for PRA. We don't know how big the problem is yet. The test is pretty expensive ($190), so some people may not do it because of this. There are discounts possible that can lower the price by 25%, but it is still a relatively expensive test.

Jazmin had problems with the delivery. 2 pups died in the womb earlier. Therefore she suffered from internal intoxication. No survivors at the pups  , and the mother is still endangered.
Haven't heard about you for quite a while... What's going on out there?

2007- another year with plenty of plans, with a renewed (and hopefully successful ) Kuvasz Club- with Juhász József as the newly elected president.

No, there are no Jackals in Switzerland. Orginally wolves, lynx, wildcats and bears are the predators which would belong into the middle european mountain region, the alpes of Switzerland.
In Switzerland nowadays there is a tiny little population of wolves. They do appear single or in a pack of 3 - 5 animals. They come and go. Then there is a little population of lynx which will stay here, some wildcats too. There are many, many foxes ( too many actually, so they do live not only in the woods, but also in towns ) Badgers, Martens and Weasle.

We didn't sleept last night because my 2 year old girl Lili wasn't sleepy. She is a bit cold. Is there sakals (canis aureus) in Swissland? The sakals are the european coyots. For me it is very interesting to walk in a forest, where there are predators. Bye- bye, I must go  to learn to my exams !

Hi Ku-Assa,
matter of fact is, that there are Wolves in Switzerland. They come over the border in the Mountains from italy to Switzerland. And they do attack and kill the sheeps, if they can. So there is a new rule, if a wolf evidently kills more than 32 sheeps in a certain span of time, the protection will be cancelled for that certain wolf and they will shoot him. There are two LGD / Wolf Project in Switzerland. One by the Gouvernment, and one by a special Organisation. I hope, that they will find a way to come together and get the Sheep breeders to teamwork. After all the Gouvernment is paying a fee for every single sheep that got killed somehow. No matter how. And matter of fact is as well, that the breeders do lose more sheeps due to accident in the mountains, ( when Sheeps fall down from a rock or sickness, or due to injuries, or so ) than due to Wolfattacks.
Concerning the Kuvasz, - we do not have any projects about Kuvaszok in LGD charge. We do breed them as family dogs, pets, as guard dogs, or farm dogs, but NOT as LGD. So the most experienced LGDs in here are the Maremmanos and Pyris.
I think the Komondor would make a good LGD too, - however the shepherds would not want to have them, because of their coat. They want easy grooming dogs, for they don't care about grooming and brushing dogs.
An other probleem is to educate the many Tourists that hike around in the mountains, how to behave and deal with LGDs in charge.

Hi Susa!
I am very happy, I like these projects. I am hunter, my favorit wild animal is the wolf. In Hungary arent wolfs too but in hungarian national parks are similar projects and we are in the convention of Bern. Unfortunately these projects are in early stadium. In Hungary from a few years are sakals (canis aureus). I want to be propagands to the lifestook guardian dogs and then the kuvaszok and komondorok could do their work. I hope in Switzerland in a few years will be bears (Bern) lynxes and wolfs! I send to the swiss peoples: dont wory about predators, they are national treasures !
