On the Occassion of the Wold Dogshow in Stockholm, - the Swedish Club for Mountain and Herdingdogs was going to be held the so called World Winner Circuit.
Judge was Mr. Soos Attila from Hungary.

Wenn der Hund in den Hetzärmel beissen soll, - muss er das aber vorher gelernt haben, - also der Hund muss ausgebildet worden sein, - sonst weiss er doch gar nicht, was ein Hetzärmel ist und dass er da hineinbeissen soll ?? Verstehe ich das richtig ? Also doch Schutzhundeausbildung ?

Entschuldigung, ich habe verstanden was ihr testet. Aber ich würde gerne wissen WIE ihr das macht. :)
Wenn ihr den Schutztrieb testet, wie macht ihr das ? Was macht ihr mit dem Hund, damit er in den Schutztrieb fällt ... provoziert ihr den Hund bis er böse wird, greift ihr den Besitzer an  oder was tut ihr ?
Was muss der Hund machen ? Bellen und dazwischen gehen, oder den " bösen Mann " beissen ?
Was möchte der Richter sehen ?

Ich habe gesagt, dass wir seit 30 Jahren Wesensprüfungen machen, und nur wesensstarke Hunde mit stabilem Nervenkostüm in die Zucht dürfen. Aber den Schutztrieb testen wir beim Kuvasz nicht.
Deshalb möchte ich fragen, wie so ein Test aus sieht bei euch. Was macht ihr mit dem Hund, damit er seinen Schutztrieb an der Prüfung zeigt. Und nach welchen Kriterien beurteilt ihr das dann ?

I'd better ask in English, so the other members can understand as well.
We do test the Temperament in Switzerland since 30 years. And only dogs with sound and stable temperament can be used in breeding. However, we do not test guarding instincts and protecting drive of the Kuvasz.
Would you be so nice and tell me, what exactely you do with the Kuvasz to make them show their drive of Protection and bravery ?

Hi everybody,
Yes, it is quiet here in this corner. But Melissa and me are not the only members in this Forum. Where are the others ?
Well, as for myself, I was invited to join a Kuvasz Meeting in Sweden, this summer. We spent a good time there. Have been visiting a CAC Show, taking part in a Rallye with a male Kuvasz who was owned by our host. And met my friend Christina Klosterberg who have had imported a daughter of our male Maros.
Of course, we talked a lot. And finally, I was supposed to be judging in the inofficial Show ( a Fun - Match ) of the Meeting. There were over 20 Kuvaszok to be judging. A great deal for me.
Now we're back in normal life. Work, housechores, family, training dogs and horses, club stuff to do, business as usual.
Last weekend we went on a hiking tour in the Mountains and our 10 years old male Kuvasz Maros was with us. I am so happy and greatful, that he still is healthy and in top condition.
That is, in a nutshell, what we did during the summer

I did not mean to offend you. I’m terrible sorry, if I sounded like this. It was not my intention to.
I do admire your effort and enthusiasm on this subject. And as I said, in my previous posting, - I can understand you on the one side.
Anyway, allow me please to correct you in the one or other phrase.
I did call Optigen too and talked to them directly.
Yes, Laboklin approached Optigen for the license reason. Which also Optigen confirmed.
But, neither Optigen, nor Laboklin said, that they would have an agreement !! On the contrary.
Both of them said, that they would currently be in NEGOTIATION. Which is a huge difference.
You said, Laboklin’s Test is not safe ….. But how can you know that ? They use the same basic methods like Optigen.
There are some dog-breed clubs who have had their dogs tested independend with Optigen AND Laboklin as well. And got the same results.
For example the Retriever Club of Switzerland and the German Labrador Club did so. You can check it on their websites, see Ringtest. And compared with the little number of tested Kuvasz, many more hundreds of dogs of all Retriever breeds have been tested twice with both companies.
And why does Optigen re-test Laboklin tested dogs and on the other hand Laboklin does re-test Optigen tested dogs ? Why is that ???
To me, this policy sounds very political.
As for me it is important, that we do have the option at all to get our dogs tested. I don’t care if it is in the US or in Germany. Important is, that the test is safe and available.
So far the Ringtest tells, the Laboklin test must be correct, otherwise, there must have been a difference in the results. But this was not the case.
So why should we Europeans not use the opportunity of Germany, for a lower price and for a shorter way of shipping the blood samples ?
Concerning the Patent and copy of the test.
I think it is known that in Medical Research and Science it is common and absolutely legal to copy tests, procedures and treatments, after it has been published and – most important, as long as there is NO VALID Patent on it, in the country concerned.
My information is, that at the time Laboklin copied that Test, - there was NO Patent for the European continent existing.
In the time being, things have changed and now the Int. Patent is pending …. So time and the patent attorney will tell, what the consequences will be in this certain case.

I think, it is good to be sceptical and critical in this matters. Particularely if it is about health clearences. And I do understand Tessie's concerns though.
However, I think we should not bother to inform ourselves properly about the real situation, instead of spreading suspicion and rumours, which makes people unnecessarily confuse and concerned.
An Email, a phone call to the companies concerned would help to clear.
I did contact the two companies and asked them about the current situation.
I got the Information that:
- The prcd PRA test by Optigen is in deed patented, but ONLY in the USA - however, it is NOT patented in Europe !!
So therefore, and because of the published script about the test by Optigen over here in Europe, Laboklin was allowed to legally copy that test.
- Laboklin did, after their own researches,- modify that test.
Right now, Laboklin is in negotiation with Optigen for working out licences and teamwork.
So, this is what I got directly from the companies.

I am working in a animalclinic and we do work togehter with Laboklin since a long time. All I can say is, that this company is very serious and all their testings aproven and absolutely reliable. !!

Hihi, I knew you were joking, but it reminded me at those two show-stories, that's why I posted them here.
When Ertusch rolled himself in the duck-poops and dead fish, I was upset. He was just 15 month at this time. No need to tell how bad he was stinking.  But a few days later we all could laugh about that mishap.
I don't want insult the american members. But that overstyling in the american Showkuvasz really needs getting used to for us European Kuvasz Folk. But that's their way to groom and style their showdogs. I've had Afghan Hounds before the Kuvasz. They need to be styled for the show, also in here. So, I do well know how much work it is, to get them prepared und groomed for the show. That is why I am so happy the Kuvasz in European shows don't need to appear that styled.

I have an other show-story about the opposite extreme. A couple years and Show experiences later I gave advice to a novice kuvasz owner who wanted to show her dog. I told her to NOT bath the dog before the show. I said, she should just brush and clean stains with water only, if necessary. However, I did not know, how her dog was looking like. One week later on the show, she brought an "brownish" - filthy, stainy, shaggy ungroomed Kuvasz to the show. Around his neck was a black ribbon-like stain from the chain. I was shocked when I saw him and tried to help cleaning the dog as good as it gets. The dog did not win and the judge gave advice how to groom a Kuvasz for the show. The owner was very mad with me and blamed me for not winning.
Well, the Americans have their own way how to groom and show their dogs, and we here in Europe have our mentality.
I don't like those bathed and overly styled dogs either. - But I think, a stinking, filthy dog does not belong in a showring either.

My Kuvasz can enjoy what ever he wants. And he likes to dash through shallow water in the sand and through mudd. He can dig in mouseholes.
But for the shows, I would not dare to bring a dirty brown stinking Kuvasz to the showring.
I do not bath my dogs before the show though, but I see, that the come clean and neat.
Only one time in my Kuvasz Show life, I had to bath my dog. It's been 16 years ago, when I wanted to show my Youngster. The night before the show we were on the beach and he found an empty nest of ducks. He rolled himself in it and was covered all over with duck droppings. Do you know how disgusting duck poop is stinking ? Terrible !! But not enough with tha, he also found a dead fish laying on the beach and -YES - of course he rolled himself in it. So I had no other solution but to give him a good bath with Shampoo and all. the next day in show, the judge laughed at me, telling me that I would have a white something but no Kuvasz. So we got excused for overgroomed.

No, there are no Jackals in Switzerland. Orginally wolves, lynx, wildcats and bears are the predators which would belong into the middle european mountain region, the alpes of Switzerland.
In Switzerland nowadays there is a tiny little population of wolves. They do appear single or in a pack of 3 - 5 animals. They come and go. Then there is a little population of lynx which will stay here, some wildcats too. There are many, many foxes ( too many actually, so they do live not only in the woods, but also in towns ) Badgers, Martens and Weasle.

matter of fact is, that there are Wolves in Switzerland. They come over the border in the Mountains from italy to Switzerland. And they do attack and kill the sheeps, if they can. So there is a new rule, if a wolf evidently kills more than 32 sheeps in a certain span of time, the protection will be cancelled for that certain wolf and they will shoot him. There are two LGD / Wolf Project in Switzerland. One by the Gouvernment, and one by a special Organisation. I hope, that they will find a way to come together and get the Sheep breeders to teamwork. After all the Gouvernment is paying a fee for every single sheep that got killed somehow. No matter how. And matter of fact is as well, that the breeders do lose more sheeps due to accident in the mountains, ( when Sheeps fall down from a rock or sickness, or due to injuries, or so ) than due to Wolfattacks.
Concerning the Kuvasz, - we do not have any projects about Kuvaszok in LGD charge. We do breed them as family dogs, pets, as guard dogs, or farm dogs, but NOT as LGD. So the most experienced LGDs in here are the Maremmanos and Pyris.
I think the Komondor would make a good LGD too, - however the shepherds would not want to have them, because of their coat. They want easy grooming dogs, for they don't care about grooming and brushing dogs.
An other probleem is to educate the many Tourists that hike around in the mountains, how to behave and deal with LGDs in charge.

Hello,
in Switzerland, Brown Bears, Wolves and Lynx has been died out. However, there is a project to settle down lynxes again. The released lynx do well to survive on their own here. And from Italy wolves come over the border in the alps for hunting. Of course they do attack flock as well. There is a Livestock Guard Project running, because the wolves and lynx are protected animals in here. Some Sheep breeders joined this project and have LGDs and Donkeys to protect and guard the flocks. The Donkeys for alarming.
There are NO Kuvasz in charge here, but Maremmano and Great Pyr.Mountaindogs, only. Other Sheep breeders are not pleased about the wolf protection and would rather like to shoot them.
In 2005 one adult Brown Bear from Italy walked over the border in the Mountains and stayed here in the eastern alp of Switzerland, during the summer.
People here were confused. They did not know, if they should be pleased or scared and how to deal with the bear. After all, the very last Swiss bear got killed in 1898 ! They decided to just let him be and observe him. He killed some sheeps, chicken and destroyed and plundered some beehives. He was shy toward people and dogs. When people shouted at him and made noise, he ran away.
By the end of the summer, the bear disappeared again. Now, this year the same bear appeared in Germany. He came via austria to the German alps.
Same "Game". He killed sheeps, chickens and ate up honey.
The Germans did shoot him unfortunately.
