Here are my critiques of the Kuvasz shown at Westminster this year. I made my evaluations based on watching the video on the Westminster site multiple times. The American Kennel Club Kuvasz standard was my guide. I pay a lot of attention to breed type as described in the standard. Two of the most important aspects of type are the head and the coat. In addition, the Kuvasz should have medium bone, the body should be a horizontal rectangle slightly deviated from a square (not a square!), it should not be too weedy or too short-legged/chunky ("neither lanky or cobby"), it should be large, strong, balanced, and be well muscled, agile, and active. The Kuvasz should carry its tail low unless it is excited. With the head I look at the proportions and characteristics as stated in the standard. From the side the head should look like a Kuvasz head and be strong and noble. It should have a barely perceptible stop ("never abrupt" and "raising the forehead gently above the plane of the muzzle"), a fairly long, dry muzzle (in order for the head length, as measured from tip of nose to occiput (little bone at back of head), to be slightly less than 1/2 the height (approximately 45% and above) at the withers (not including the HAIR on top of the withers!), and a fairly flat skull ("elongated" not domed). From the front the head should appear wedge-shaped which is the shape it should have due to the description of the width being 1/2 the length in the standard. Eyes should be "dark brown, the darker the better" and almond shaped. The head, and its shape and characteristics, is a major determinant of how typy a Kuvasz is. The coat is white and should be medium coarse (not soft and fluffy) and showing a definite distribution over the head, body, and legs as stated in the standard. The medium coarse texture helps shed dirt which is a plus for the work for which the Kuvasz was intended. I also pay alot of attention to structure and movement--especially as they both relate to the standard. The Kuvasz is supposed to have a free and easy gait that is also springy ("elastic"). The springy is something that helps give the Kuvasz a long stride ("hind legs reach far under, meeting or even passing the imprint of the front legs"). This type of movement facilitates the ability to travel long distances without tiring, and structure will help determine if the Kuvasz has the ability to move in this way. The standard states, "untiring ability to work and cover rough terrain for long periods of time." I'm a big believer in type as well as in form to function, which you will see in which things I noted in my critiques. I have a Kuvasz story for you all this morning (it is in California!). I woke up this morning and walked into the kitchen only to find the refrigerator door wide open. I knew who the guilty party was and it wasn't one of the cats! You see I've had to put child proof locks on the refrigerator door to keep Magda out. She is very smart at opening things, and she knows delicious stuff is to be found in the refrigerator, and she likes to open it up and help herself. So I had to buy these childproof locks and install on the door. Unfortunately, sometimes I forget to snap it closed. Last nights was one of those times. and the very greedy Magda seems to know when I have chicken or beef inside. I DID have chicken. This morning all that remained was a small portion of the wrapper. Fortunately she hadn't eaten all my butter and cheese. That is how my showdog acts!!!! Melissa and Magda [email protected]

Hi Susa, I'm not at all insulted. In my opinion many dogs over here are shown very overgroomed and sculpted. I don't care for the unnatural "toe-in-a-light-socket" look. Neat and clean is what I prefer for shows, but not the blowing out of the Kuvasz's coat with a high speed blow dryer to the point that all the waves are gone and what is left is a giant puff ball. Hihi, I knew you were joking, but it reminded me at those two show-stories, that's why I posted them here. When Ertusch rolled himself in the duck-poops and dead fish, I was upset. He was just 15 month at this time. No need to tell how bad he was stinking. But a few days later we all could laugh about that mishap. I don't want insult the american members. But that overstyling in the american Showkuvasz really needs getting used to for us European Kuvasz Folk. But that's their way to groom and style their showdogs. I've had Afghan Hounds before the Kuvasz. They need to be styled for the show, also in here. So, I do well know how much work it is, to get them prepared und groomed for the show. That is why I am so happy the Kuvasz in European shows don't need to appear that styled. Susa & Maros

No, not at all, you are absolutely right, jtudeski and I both have young kuvasz,8 and 9 month- old and we were just kidding about what they look like on a rainy, muddy day, but that's not how they would look at a show, certainly. But for me, American kuvaszs look too styly, they seem to lose their ancient characteristics. Képtáram

I have an other show-story about the opposite extreme. A couple years and Show experiences later I gave advice to a novice kuvasz owner who wanted to show her dog. I told her to NOT bath the dog before the show. I said, she should just brush and clean stains with water only, if necessary. However, I did not know, how her dog was looking like. One week later on the show, she brought an "brownish" - filthy, stainy, shaggy ungroomed Kuvasz to the show. Around his neck was a black ribbon-like stain from the chain. I was shocked when I saw him and tried to help cleaning the dog as good as it gets. The dog did not win and the judge gave advice how to groom a Kuvasz for the show. The owner was very mad with me and blamed me for not winning. Well, the Americans have their own way how to groom and show their dogs, and we here in Europe have our mentality. I don't like those bathed and overly styled dogs either. - But I think, a stinking, filthy dog does not belong in a showring either. My Kuvasz can enjoy what ever he wants. And he likes to dash through shallow water in the sand and through mudd. He can dig in mouseholes. But for the shows, I would not dare to bring a dirty brown stinking Kuvasz to the showring. I do not bath my dogs before the show though, but I see, that the come clean and neat. Only one time in my Kuvasz Show life, I had to bath my dog. It's been 16 years ago, when I wanted to show my Youngster. The night before the show we were on the beach and he found an empty nest of ducks. He rolled himself in it and was covered all over with duck droppings. Do you know how disgusting duck poop is stinking ? Terrible !! But not enough with tha, he also found a dead fish laying on the beach and -YES - of course he rolled himself in it. So I had no other solution but to give him a good bath with Shampoo and all. the next day in show, the judge laughed at me, telling me that I would have a white something but no Kuvasz. So we got excused for overgroomed. Susa & Maros
