One of the most famous dog shows in the USA will take place next week on Monday and Tuesday. This is the Westminster Kennel Club Show. There are 8 Kuvasz entered--1 dog (male) and 7 bitches (females). The show has streaming video on the web of the breed judging. It is supposed to be available within about 2 hours after the judging of each breed. Here is the main webpage: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/
Kuvasz show at 9:30am New York time (Eastern Standard Time). I'm not sure how many hours that is behind the timezone in Hungary. But the streaming video should be available to watch Monday evening. Guess I forgot to say Kuvasz show on Monday.

I see that the terrible eye problem PRA is being discussed. This is good. Will the Hungaria Kuvasz Club be setting a policy on this ?
As some of you know, the American company Optigen now has a DNA test that can determine if a Kuvasz is clear/normal, a carrier, or affected with PRA. Up until now this required a blood test. I have been talking to Optigen about making this test available by cheek swab. This involves taking a little brush and swabbing the inside of the dog's cheek to get skin cells. DNA is extracted from these cells. Optigen is now working to make the cheek swab method available within the next couple of months.
In the USA very few Kuvasz have been DNA tested for PRA. We don't know how big the problem is yet. The test is pretty expensive (*190), so some people may not do it because of this. There are discounts possible that can lower the price by 25%, but it is still a relatively expensive test.

Hi Mangaman,
I'm so sorry about Jazmin and her puppies. My thoughts are with Peter Juhasz.
Yes, I received your email, but I can't open the images. The format is unusual maybe????

Hi ku-assa,
No, we don't seem to have any lynx in my area, but we do have bobcats. Bobcats are smaller than lynx. A bobcat is less than 1/2 the size of a Kuvasz, so I think the bobcat has more to fear!
I remember the first time I saw a bobactat. I thought it was a domestic cat until I saw the tufts of hair coming out of its ears and the stubby tail. It was rather big for a domestic cat too. It showed only mild curiosity in me.
You're right a puma probably could kill a Kuvasz, but they are not dumb and gernerally go for easier meals. Not many Kuvasz would make an easy meal! And if there were 2 Kuvasz, I would bet my money on the dogs winning. The Kuvasz would simply harass the heck out of the puma and annoy it into leaving.

What kind of toys do your Kuvasz like? What are your getting them for Christmas? My dogs have particular preferences. Magda likes orange toys in chenille fabric, whereas Ximanya likes lavender fleece.
Magda also LOVES a huge yellow hippopotamus made of rubber and with a squeeker. It is most unusual--not completely hollow but stuffed with more rubber, so that when it is stepped on it squeesk/screams and continues to scream until all the air has come back into it. Gets the ears up every time!

The FCI Standard in Hungarian has these proportions:
Fontos méretarányok:
A marmagasság százalékában:
Törzshosszúság: 104%
Mellkasmélység: 48%
Dongásság: 27%
Övméret: 120%
Fejhossz: 45%
Az orrhossz a fejhossz: 42%-a
A fülhossz a fejhossz: 50%a
Yet the English translation does not. Does anyone know why?

Hi Ku-Assa,
Yes, I know about it and not just from stories! My Kuvasz have all worked. All have chased off coyotes. Where my horses are there are also bears. The bears never come anywhere near when I have a Kuvasz with me. There is also a mountain lion, so I am always careful going into the hills at night where my horses are unless I have a Kuvasz with me. I never see the mountain lion, but other people have not been so lucky. The cats are not stupid though and don't want to approach (or even be seen when there is a big, noisy, brave dog around!).
I will have to tell you some stories of how my Kuvasz guard against coyotes. It is fascinating to watch a dog doing what it was bred to do. Tessie my Kuvasz that died last year at age 12 was an excellent coyote protector. I would have her off leash around the horse corrals, and she would patrol the property. NOTHING was allowed inside the boundaries I had walked with her. Two sides of the property were unfenced, but she would never stray from past the boundaries. But coyotes were not allowed inside. Rabbits and other little creatures were ignored, but coyotes she hated on sight. When they would venture on her territory, she would stiffen and puff herself up. Then she would lower her head and charge--silently until she was almost on top of the coyote. Then she would make the most ferocious growling and barking! The coyotes were very fast and would run away extremely quickly. Tessie would not pursue them once she reached the edge of the property. This is a wise thing because a lone coyote will try to lure a dog away and then the whole pack will attack it. A smart guardian will not fall for this trick. Tessie never did. I was very proud of her.
I do have more coyote encounter stories. One with Tessie when she was the teacher of my Ximanya when she was a puppy and didn't know how sneaky those coyotes were. Tessie saved Ximanya's life. And quite happily now Ximanya is 12 years old.
My current showdog Magda has also had coyote encounters, and she has proven to me all her guardian instincts are quite intact. She is not the least bit dog aggressive at dog shows, yet she hated coyotes from the first time she saw one. I was impressed. I can tell more details in another post, but that first time she immediately jumped in front of me and blocked the coyote's advance towards me. Then she went after it in a very unfriendly way (growling and barking) and chased it all the way down the street in front of my house and over a wall. She was on a long Flexi-Lead at the time (which I was holding), and I couldn't run as fast as she wanted to go. Otherwise she would have caught that coyote. I have no doubt she would have dispatched it.
As to bears, the Kuvasz owned by Magda's breeder, Debbie Blank of Glacier Creek Kuvasz, have guarded against them in Alaska very, very frequently as there are many more bears in Alaska than in Southern California. Also her Kuvasz have protected her property from moose, which I believe can be even more dangerous than bears. Not everyone lives in an area that has large predators, so many breeders no longer know if their dogs retain correct guarding instinct. They may hope so, but there is no substitute for real-life experience!

Are these photos from the World Show in Poznan, Poland?
If so, is that a picture of Feher Morcos Huseg near the bottom of the page? Which Kuvasz is Cakkos? Which is Ugatos and Tamaris?

In post #84 in Tartás, etetés, Madboti appears to be discussing shampoos and the coat. But I can't tell exactly what he is saying because of the limitations of the online Hungarian dictionary I use. The USA is mentioned. Perhaps some of the grooming practises in the showring here? These practises can be excessive and include "blowing out" the coat with a high powered blow dryer. I do not like this as it can completely remove the characteristic waves in the coat.

Hi Daruma,
Thanks for identifying all the photos. It was really helpful! Is Virgonc the mother of Luca (a bitch that I think is in CZ)?
Also, thank you for the picture of your lovely puppy and all the piggies. I don't know what my Kuvasz would think of them. Does anyone make anything with the curly Mangalica hair?????

Hi Mangaman,
Please tell me more about the Mangalica pig? Do they really make good pets????? How big do they get?
We had a dinner last week of Kuvasz owners and I told them about this wavy-haired (is it wavy or curly???) Hungarian pig. They all laughed. Some were curious, but I don't know that they believed me.
