No reports I've seen in a while about Kaszon. How is he doing? He seemed to have such a great sense of humor. A lovely puppy!

Hi Eromi and Ku-Assa,
Thanks for the information. Interestingly enough, I think there is a Kuvasz named Vértesi-Selymes Nábob already in this country.
The pictures of the Kuvasz working around the sheep are excellent! Please keep them coming. I hope someone writes and article in a magazine about this project.

Some of you might have noticed that I have not been posting lately. There is a good reason for that, and it is because I've been paying attention to the terrible situation with pet food recalls in the USA. Thousands of pet foods (including both canned and dry kibble) have been recalled due to contamination with melamine and cyanuric acid from grain-based protein sources (such as wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate) imported from China. Thousands of American dogs and cats have already died from acute kidney failure caused by the food contamination. You can read about it here:
http://www.petconnection.com/blog/category/2007-food-recall/
The dry dog food I give my dogs (Eagle) does not use any grains imported from China. So we have been fortunate. Ximanya in fact had her annual blood test right around the time the recalls began. However, the vet said her liver and kidney values were great! Especially for a 12 year old dog. So I had that information to reassure me when this started, and I didn't need to take her in just to be safe. But many people have not been so lucky. They were trying to do the best for their dogs, only to find that some of these "premium" brands were using some very cheap ingredients and were actually manufactured in the same plant as the cheapest brands. To say the least, this did not make people happy!

Who are some of the people standing outside the ring at the dog show? Also inside the ring showing Kuvasz? It would be nice to be able to put names with some of the faces of people who post on this forum. I think I recognize 2!

I saw the pictures in Kiállítások, eredmények, but I don't think all the results were there (except you all know how little I understand Hungarian, so they could be there and I don't know it ).
The pictures were great! More, more!

Who are all these people?
http://klubvacsora.kuvasz.fotoalbum.hu/
I've been following the logos for the Kuvasz Klub that have been posted. Some looked nice, but then I saw the one on the flag (?) at the above link (the Kuvasz Klub's dinner?) That one is GORGEOUS If I'm not mistaken it looks like Kardosparti Dorisz, and she was one of my all-time favorite Kuvasz. With a head I consider ideal.

In today's mail came the notice from Optigen for Magda's DNA test for PRA.
I am happy to announce that Ch. Glacier Creek's Matanuska Magda is
genetically normal/clear for prcd-PRA.
The form states:
"Test Results: Genotype of your dog is Normal/Clear.
Risk for developing PRA: This dog will never develop the prcd form of
PRA (progressive rod-cone degeneration form of Progressive Retinal
Atrophy).
Significance for breeding: Genetically Normal/Clear dogs can be
bred to any dog and will produce no pups affected with the prcd form of
PRA."
I did post some time ago information about Magda's pedigree, but here is some of that info again. On her dam's side, Magda's grandmother is a daughter of Vertesi Selymes Emir and out of a daughter of Vodicai Feher Bator Csengo. Magda also has another cross to VS Emir from her sire.

Here are my critiques of the Kuvasz shown at Westminster this year. I
made my evaluations based on watching the video on the Westminster site
multiple times. The American Kennel Club Kuvasz standard was my guide.
I pay a lot of attention to breed type as described in the standard. Two
of the most important aspects of type are the head and the coat. In
addition, the Kuvasz should have medium bone, the body should be a
horizontal rectangle slightly deviated from a square (not a square!), it
should not be too weedy or too short-legged/chunky ("neither lanky or
cobby"), it should be large, strong, balanced, and be well muscled, agile,
and active. The Kuvasz should carry its tail low unless it is excited.
With the head I look at the proportions and characteristics as stated in
the standard. From the side the head should look like a Kuvasz head and
be strong and noble. It should have a barely perceptible stop ("never
abrupt" and "raising the forehead gently above the plane of the muzzle"),
a fairly long, dry muzzle (in order for the head length, as measured from
tip of nose to occiput (little bone at back of head), to be slightly less
than 1/2 the height (approximately 45% and above) at the withers (not
including the HAIR on top of the withers!), and a fairly flat skull
("elongated" not domed). From the front the head should appear
wedge-shaped which is the shape it should have due to the description of
the width being 1/2 the length in the standard. Eyes should be "dark
brown, the darker the better" and almond shaped. The head, and its shape
and characteristics, is a major determinant of how typy a Kuvasz is.
The coat is white and should be medium coarse (not soft and fluffy) and
showing a definite distribution over the head, body, and legs as stated in
the standard. The medium coarse texture helps shed dirt which is a plus
for the work for which the Kuvasz was intended.
I also pay alot of attention to structure and movement--especially as they
both relate to the standard. The Kuvasz is supposed to have a free and
easy gait that is also springy ("elastic"). The springy is something that
helps give the Kuvasz a long stride ("hind legs reach far under, meeting
or even passing the imprint of the front legs"). This type of movement
facilitates the ability to travel long distances without tiring, and
structure will help determine if the Kuvasz has the ability to move in
this way. The standard states, "untiring ability to work and cover rough
terrain for long periods of time." I'm a big believer in type as well as
in form to function, which you will see in which things I noted in my
critiques.

Hi Beniona,
That is too bad about the pedigree because they have such beautiful breed type. I particularly LOVE very wavy coats. I might even have been tempted to get on a plane to Transylvania if they did have a pedigree. I am puppy shopping you see, and it is getting close to the time when I could bring a new puppy home.

I have a Kuvasz story for you all this morning (it is in California!). I woke up this morning and walked into the kitchen only to find the refrigerator door wide open. I knew who the guilty party was and it wasn't one of the cats!
You see I've had to put child proof locks on the refrigerator door to keep Magda out. She is very smart at opening things, and she knows delicious stuff is to be found in the refrigerator, and she likes to open it up and help herself. So I had to buy these childproof locks and install on the door. Unfortunately, sometimes I forget to snap it closed. Last nights was one of those times. and the very greedy Magda seems to know when I have chicken or beef inside. I DID have chicken. This morning all that remained was a small portion of the wrapper. Fortunately she hadn't eaten all my butter and cheese. That is how my showdog acts!!!!

Hi Susa,
I'm not at all insulted. In my opinion many dogs over here are shown very overgroomed and sculpted. I don't care for the unnatural "toe-in-a-light-socket" look. Neat and clean is what I prefer for shows, but not the blowing out of the Kuvasz's coat with a high speed blow dryer to the point that all the waves are gone and what is left is a giant puff ball.

Hi,
I see someone has already posted in Kepek the photo of the Westminster Kuvasz breed winner. She represents one type of Kuvasz that is sometimes popular with American judges--having a very short muzzle, lots of stop, a rounded crown, and pale colored eyes.

Here is the webpage for the OFA: http://www.offa.org/
You can find the health test results for many Kuvasz in the US. Not just hip data, but elbows, patellas, thyroid, CERF (an eye exam--does not include the Optigen test for PRA), cardiac, etc. I have not seen any Optigen test results for Kuvasz show up. Yet.

Hi Mangaman,
When I got my first Kuvasz in the 1970s, health testing of Kuvasz in the US was not common. Many Kuvasz had hip dysplasia. Not many could pass the hip xray test and be certified by OFA (orthopedic foundation for animals). So breeders started selecting for better hips and choosing for breeding stock those animals that could get a hip clearance number from OFA. It took hard work over years, and some difficult choices, but hips are better. Hip dysplasia is by no means eliminated in the Kuvasz in the US, but it is better than before. Now it is quite common (and expected) to have the parents of a litter, as well as their parents and grandparents to all have hip clearances. OFA even recommends having the siblings of breeding stock xrayed to see what kind of genes are present. Are most of the puppies in a litter free of hip dysplasia? If so, animals from that litter make better breeding prospects than those from litters with multiple puppies with bad hips (even if the one you want to breed has good hips). Xraying all or most dogs in a litter is advised, but it is hard to do, and needless to say it is EXPENSIVE!!! It only happens some of the time here. Breeders are not always loaded with cash. And puppy buyers don't necessarily want to do the xrays (and there is the cash again....).
