Dear Valued PetSmart customer:
As you have probably heard, Menu Foods, a national manufacturer of pet foods, issued a voluntary recall of canned and pouched wet dog and cat food manufactured in two of its facilities between December 2006 and March 2007. Again, this is a recall of a specific type of wet pet food made by Menu Foods. Other wet pet foods and all dry pet food and treats are not impacted by this recall.
Menu Foods initiated the recall after receiving reports that some of its foods may be the cause of reported illnesses and kidney failure in dogs and cats. Menu Foods distributes these products to supermarkets, mass merchandisers and pet specialty stores, including PetSmart®, under a variety of brand names.
Click here to see a complete list of PetSmart products that are part of the recall, as well as their respective UPCs (also referred to as the bar code). The bar code can be found on the product label; the UPC is under the series of bars. As a reminder, the items listed are the only items that PetSmart carries that have been affected by the recall.
In the meantime, we have pulled all recalled products from our store shelves and have a process in place to help ensure they're not restocked or distributed in any way. The brands and products currently on our shelves are considered safe.
If you have purchased any of the recalled items, you should discontinue use immediately. We recommend you contact your vet if you have any concerns that your pet may have been affected. Symptoms may include:
Vomiting (this is usually the first sign)
Refusal to eat
Fatigue
Abnormal increase in water consumption
Abnormal increase in urination

Today, 5-year-old K-9 Officer “Szultan” of the Sugarcreek, Pennsylvania Police Department was laid to rest at the Rocky Grove Fire Hall. Szultan a German shepherd from Hungary died on November 23, after being struck by an unknown motorist. Sugarcreek is a small community about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Members of the Community Ambulance Service rushed Szultan to the Franklin Animal Clinic, where he died a short time later.
Members of the law enforcement and civilian community came out on a cloudy and dreary day to pay their respects to the fallen officer. Szultan was remembered as being a very outgoing dog who loved police work, adored his partner, Sugarcreek Police Officer Ryan Ashbaugh, and loved playing with kids.
“Not one time did he ever give me an attitude no matter what kind of day he was having,” said Asbaugh, during the emotional and tear-filled eulogy he gave for Szultan, his partner and friend.
Continuing, he told of Szultan’s first drug bust saying “I just picked him up from the trainers, he was brand new and a call came in for an accident so I thought I would bring him on the call to see how he would respond to the lights, siren and noises.
“Well, the Chief told me to bring him over to the wrecked car, which I did, and the Chief told the driver ‘if you have any drugs or contraband you better give it up now, this is a trained police dog and once we let him loose he’ll find it.’ Those people starting emptying syringes, pipes and other stuff out of their pockets like it was on fire, yet the irony was, nobody knew he wasn’t trained yet to search for drugs, his presence alone was enough.” Most of those in attendance started laughing.
A local minister also gave a brief eulogy for Szultan and took a moment to read the “Police Dog Prayer, in which many people were heard crying during its delivery: “Oh almighty God, whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe, watch over my handler while I sleep. Protect my handler from harm while I am unable to do so. I pray, help keep our streets and homes safe while my handler and I rest. I ask for your loving care because my handler's duty is dangerous. Grant my handler your unending strength and courage in our daily assignments. Dear God, protect my brave handler, grant your almighty protection, unite my handler safely with the family after the tour of duty has ended. I ask nothing for myself. Amen.”
The service concluded with taps being played and a fly over by a medical helicopter immediately after the following was heard loudly coming over the police channel of a radio in the back of the room; “Sugarcreek 5 from Venango County (few seconds pause), Sugarcreek 5 from Venango County (pause), Sugarcreek 5 from Venango County last call (pause), Sugarcreek 5 from Venango County rest in peace.”
